FORWARD
Winston Chiu, president of Technik Associates, Inc. and also the chairman of Taiwan Turnkey-Project Association, was born in 1946 and has devoted to the woodworking machine industry for more than 30 years. At the beginning, he was the first man who sold the metalworking machinery from Taiwan to Europe
and America. After Technik Associates, Inc. established, he started to specialize in the woodworking
machinery.
SOURCE OF TAIWAN WOODWORKING MACHINERY
The production of woodworking machinery in Taiwan began some 47 years ago in the city ofFeng Yuan. Today more than 200 manufacturers are established in the city and its urban area,
making Feng Yuan the major center for woodworking machinery in Taiwan. Winston Chiu
reviews the development of the Taiwanese industry.
IN THE EARLIER BEGINNING
In the early 1970s, the machinery produced in Taiwan was far beyond world standard and tendency. However, through continuous research and development, the first 20ft container of modern woodworking
machinery was shipped to USA by Technik Associates in 1978. In that period, USA and Canada are the
main markets where Taiwan woodworking machines exported.
LIFE ON THE WORLD STAG
In the 1980s, Winston often led more than 100 Taiwanese woodworking machine builders to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines for business visit and experience exchange. At the same time, he was elected as the 2nd and the 3rd term chairman of Taiwan Woodworking MachineryAssociation( TWMA ) from 1987 to 1989.

THE THIRD LARGEST IN THE WORLD
In the 1990s, the woodworking machinery has been innovated in designing and manufacturing, due to the constant European and American technique and modern machines imported by Winston. In the meantime, Taiwan became the 3rd largest exporter of WWM in the world, following Germany and Italy and was also America's largest providing country of WWM.
In addition, the Taiwanese WWM industry decided some policies in order to improve the industry further, such as:
- to established the “Interwood Taipei” Woodworking Machinery Show.
- to unify the terminology used in the industry and the related technology.
- to set up a national standard to govern accuracy and quality.
FUTURE TREND
In the 21th century, Winston advances a theory of “Innovalue” which means Innovation and Value-added. He considers the following factors of the main missions in the next century:- a healthy industrial education and training system assures the industry of well-trained and experienced engineers and machinists.
- rapid expansion into International trading has led to new technology and information being introduced at a much faster pace than before.
- Explore positively in the potential areas. For instance, Mainland China, India, Mexico, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, UAE, Iran, Syria, Egypt and Turkey.
BEST WISHES
Recently, as the coming of the joining in WTO, Taiwan encounters a intense competition from the world, especially the so-called conventional industry. Winston points out further, to hold Taiwan's woodworking machinery industry in the world market, we have to keep researching and working with continuous innovation and surmount from the system of our industry. We do not believe that the “Industry of Sunset” exists. “We only firmly believe that we will hold our heads up in the world and we will be whatever we want to be.” Winston shows the faith of Taiwan woodworking machinery.
